The problem with the rush to ‘do AI’

They asked for my view, and we started by reframing the problem: it’s not a tech issue, it’s a people issue. 

If your people don’t feel safe, informed and included, you’ll never get sustainable adoption. 

We helped them design a human-centered approach, grounded in purpose and trust:

 

  • Clarity first: We worked with leaders to define where AI could remove low-value tasks without touching judgment or creativity. Together, we identified 10 “safe and smart” use cases with frontline teams. 

  • Guardrails: We co-created a one-page policy in plain English: what’s okay, what’s not, and how data is protected. Everyone knew the rules, and they actually understood them. 

  • Upskilling: Instead of one big training day, we ran short, role-based learning sprints focused on prompts, bias, and verification. It was hands-on and practical. 

  • Proof: We measured time saved, quality improvements, and, most importantly, confidence levels. 

 

Six months later, engagement scores were up, rework was down, and people were less afraid of AI. They trusted the process because they’d been part of it. 

Microsoft’s Work Trend Index 2025 shows leaders want AI productivity gains, but employees are burnt out. The fix? Pair tools with upskilling and trust, not pressure.

1. Match the message to the style (before you talk policy). 

  • Lead with productivity + outcomes for results-first people; lead with support + inclusion for people-first. 

  • Lead with risk controls + accuracy for detail/risk-focused people; keep the language simple and specific. 

 

2. Make guardrails human, not legal. 

  • Create a one-page “OK / Not OK / Ask first” guide with real examples for each team. 

  • Build one default rule: If it includes customer data, financials, or IP – don’t paste it in. Use approved pathways. 

 

3. Use EI to lower fear and lift trust. 

  • Name what’s in the room: “What’s the worry here – accuracy, data, or job impact?” 

  • Co-design the next step: small pilot + clear support + a place to ask questions without judgement. 

 

4. Run style-mixed pilots (not just the enthusiasts). 

  • Include early adopters and sceptics to surface blind spots fast. 

  • Debrief using DISC language: what each style needed to feel safe, clear and confident. 

 
 

5. Teach one verification habit as the new norm. 

  • “Prompt → Check → Prove”: ask clearly, verify accuracy/bias, confirm data sensitivity. 

  • Make it visible: add a simple checklist into team workflows (meetings, reports, client comms).
